Ms. Callentine's 1st Grade Class...WILD about learning!

We had a lot of fun finding out if we could change a liquid to a solid...without a freezer!  Our class project took first place for our grade at the Herrera science fair.  Way to go!

Plants! 03/18/2009

We've spent a few weeks discovering all we could about seeds, roots, stems, leaves and flowers and the plants all those parts make up!  We discovered the baby plant waiting inside every seed, and we enjoyed eating as many plants parts as we could think of.  Our class favorite?  The artichoke flower!

We use base-ten manipulative blocks and a tens and ones workmat to develop a concrete understanding of place value.  Students learn the importance of adding up all the numbers in the ones place before adding up the numbers in the tens place.  They represent their understanding of the concept with the manipulatives.  These skills will be useful as students learn to regroup!

Reading response 01/02/2009

After the surprising snowfall in December, our class was inspired to read the story of a very curious little mouse and his winter adventures.  We worked hard to summarize the events of the story after reading "If You Take a Mouse to the Movies"  and hope you'll enjoy seeing a few of the results!

Workstations 01/02/2009

We use workstations to reinforce things we've already practiced together.  Students spend time reading independently or with a buddy, working on the computers, exploring topics in science and social studies, writing, and playing games to practice phonics skills.
